Are you?
Then show it and explain why you chose this name :)

My former Hyperion class flagship was called "L'Intrépide":

(you will see it when the feature allowing to display former flagships will be ready ^^')

It was a reference to several antique Earthling French naval ships:

My actual Shiva class flagship is called "Many Hands":

Why?
- sounds great ^^
- it has many antennas!
- Shiva (an old Earthing Indian divinity) was sometimes represented with several arms
- I got in mind a fragment a quote saying something like "goddess with many hands", but I can't figure out where I heard this ^^'

I love both those names, and the reasons behind them are really interesting! :)

I originally wanted to call my Brünhild-class flagship Selene, after the Greek goddess of the moon, since I love the myth of Selene and Endymion. But as Greek ship names have traditionally been a staple of the FPA (which is, of course, much more culturally diverse in general) I looked for a Germanic equivalent and found the moon god Mani who, while not a direct equivalent to the Greek Selene, still struck my fancy too. He is the brother of the sun goddess Sol, and they both ride their chariots across the sky until they are devoured by two wolves on Ragnarök. I just love the moon no matter what it's called, haha.

My Barbarossa-class flagship has been dedicated in the Germanic goddess Hlin's name. Hlin was a goddess-protector that may have been an aspect goddess of Frigg. Legend states she is one of Frigg's handmaidens, sent to protect those whom her mistress deigns in need. She also is a goddess who comforts mourners (Hlin is sometimes called the Goddess of Consolation) and serves as a messenger of prayers from devotees of Frigg to her mistress. She not only represents protection, but she also represents compassion--which is precisely why I chose this name. To protect others with compassion is a noble goal for me personally, and it seems especially fitting for a high admiral's policy, as well--to protect his nation and to show compassion for his charges and men.

Just noticed this and figured I will share mine.

My first named flagship was the Totenkopf, Berlin-class. I named it after an old German skull and cross bones military symbol (Totenkopf means "Death's Head"), which was used by the Prussian Army, Imperial German Army and most famously by the SS. Of course it is based on the fearsome age-old symbol of the skull and crossbones which means that you give no quarter and expect none, in defiance of death and danger.

Under the SS it was best known for being the name of the 3rd SS Panzer Division.

My current flagship, of the Wilhelmina-class, is called Rudolf der Grosse and it simply means "Rudolf the Great" in German. I just decided to name it after the founder of the Galactic Empire. I wanted to see what the Wilhelmina class looked like so I switched the Totenkopf for it on my current character. When I eventually die I will probably use a Berlin-class called the Totenkopf again on my new character.

As you explained, this symbol is heavily charged with history and hard to assume, even for the Galactic Reich.

Yep - if I was in the FPA and the bridge called out "Sir, the enemy flagship has been identified as the Totenkopf!" I'd feel like running home. :o A good choice to drive fear into the enemy's bones.
